Snow Ushers in Cooler Conditions, But Mild Weather Returns For The Weekend

Southern Manitoba will see snow today and northwest winds that usher in cooler temperatures for Thursday. The dip in temperatures will be short-lived, though, returning to seasonably mild values on Friday.

A disturbance tracking along the international border will spread light snow across southern Manitoba this morning. The snow will taper off to flurries through the afternoon, leaving behind 2 to 4 cm in Winnipeg and 5 to 10 cm closer to the U.S. border into southwest Manitoba. Temperatures will hover near the -3°C mark through the day with northerly winds of 20 to 30 km/h.

The winds will persist overnight out of the northwest ahead of an Arctic ridge moving through Saskatchewan. Temperatures will dip to a low near -11°C with some of the cloud cover breaking up overnight.

Thursday will bring mixed skies to the region as the ridge gradually moves into the Red River Valley. Breezy northwest winds of 20 to 30 km/h will keep temperatures cool through the day; Winnipeg will see a high near -8°C. The wind will taper off for the evening, leaving the region with light winds and mostly clear skies for the night. Temperatures will dip to a low near -10°C on Thursday night.

A warm front pushing through early Friday will spread milder air back into the region. Southwesterly winds will pick up to around 30 km/h for the afternoon, sending temperatures to a high near 0°C. Skies will be partly cloudy through the day. Temperatures will dip to a low near -4°C on Friday night with winds easing a bit and shifting westerly.

Long Range Outlook

A [mostly] zonal flow aloft will keep temperatures mild with variable cloudiness right into next week. The main storm track will sit across the northern Prairies and keep things further south dry. The pattern will begin to break down next week as an upper low moves into the Prairies and begins spreading cooler air southwards.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is -3°C while the seasonal overnight low is -11°C.

Light Snow Ushers In Arctic Reinforcements

Southern Manitoba will see more light snow on Friday night and Saturday, ushering in another blast of Arctic air.

A low pressure system moving across the province will bring some milder air into the province alongside more light snow. Winnipeg will see temperatures climb to a high near -3°C today with southeast winds picking up into the 20 to 30 km/h range. Skies will stay mostly cloudy through the day.

As the low centre moves into the Red River Valley this evening, a shot of snow will move through the region. The snow should move through fairly quickly with a couple centimetres possible. The rest of the night should bring light winds and cloudy skies as temperatures dip to a low near -6°C.

Saturday will bring more cloud with highs once again climbing to around -3 or -2°C. There will be a chance for scattered flurries through the day. An Arctic ridge will begin pushing into the region and strengthen northwest winds into the 20 to 30 km/h range. Skies will begin to mix out overnight and the chance for flurries will shift towards streamers coming off of the lakes. Temperatures will dip a degree or two below -10°C on Saturday night as a reinforcing shot of Arctic air pushes southwards.

Temperatures will barely recover on Sunday with the city only seeing a high near -8°C. Northwest winds near picking up to 30 km/h will keep things feeling cold. There should be a bit of sunshine mixed in with the cloud across the region with a chance for some isolated flurries, particularly in the lee of the lakes. Winnipeg should see partly cloudy to mixed skies on Sunday night with a low near -17°C.

Long Range Outlook

Another couple cold days will kick off next week as the Arctic air moves through, but a transition into more seasonal conditions should arrive midweek. No significant snowfall is in the forecast.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is +1°C while the seasonal overnight low is -7°C.

Cool Weather And Flurries Continue

Winnipeg will see more of the same through the remainder of the week with temperatures well below seasonal values and occasional snow.

Another Arctic ridge building into the province will bring more cold weather through the rest of the week. As it approaches today, brisk northwest winds near 30 km/h will keep temperatures cold with a high near -5°C. Winnipeg will see mixed skies with a continued chance for flurries that will be streaming off of Lake Manitoba. The winds will ease tonight as the ridge moves into the region. Skies will clear overnight with temperatures dipping to a low near -16°C.

Winds will stay light through the day on Thursday, gradually shifting to the south later in the day. The city will again see a high near -5°C today, but skies will be partly cloudy (a welcome change!). A warm front will approach the region on Thursday night, bringing cloud into the region and keeping overnight lows milder. Winnipeg will see a low near -8°C overnight with winds increasing out of the south to around 20 km/h.

The warmer air arrives for Friday in southern Manitoba with highs climbing back to around the -1°C. Still below seasonal for this time of year, but only slightly. Skies will be cloudy with a southerly wind of 20 to 30 km/h easing in the afternoon as a trough moves into the Red River Valley. There will again be a chance for a bit of light snow as well, but any notable accumulation is unlikely. Skies will stay cloudy with a continued chance of light snow on Friday night. Temperatures will dip to a low near -6°C.

Long Range Outlook

The near-seasonal conditions will stick around for Saturday with a slight chance of some light snow as well. A cold front will move through the region on Saturday and open the door for a renewed blast of Arctic air. Highs will be nearly 10°C colder on Sunday with a high near -10°C. Overnight lows will follow suit, too, dropping into the mid minus teens. The first half of next week looks to continue the cold weather before a slight moderation occurs mid-week.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 2°C while the seasonal overnight low is -6°C.

Arctic Air Arrives

An Arctic airmass will move into the Prairies this week, ushering in below-seasonal temperatures for the rest of the week.

A cold front pushing through southern Manitoba this morning will bring a bit of snow to the region and mark the start of a much colder temperature regime. A bit of light snow will taper off later this morning, leaving behind mixed skies with a chance of flurries. Winds will pick up out of the northwest to around 30 gusting 50 km/h, ushering in a colder Arctic airmass. As a result, temperatures will hover around -4°C then begin to fall in the late afternoon. The city will continue to see partly cloudy to mixed skies overnight with winds diminishing. A few flurries may be possible if the lake-effect cloud from Lake Manitoba manages to push into the city overnight. Temperatures will drop to a low near -11°C.

Temperatures will struggle to recover on Tuesday. Partly cloudy skies will see increasing cloud later in the day, but winds will stay light throughout. Winnipeg will see a high near -5°C. Some light snow is possible on Tuesday night as another push of cold air builds southwards. Winds will pick up out of the northwest to around 20 km/h overnight as temperatures drop to a low near -9°C.

A large Arctic high will build into the region on Wednesday, bringing brisk northwest winds near 30 km/h. Temperatures will again climb to a high near -5°C with mixed skies and a chance of scattered flurries through the day. The region will continue to see partly cloudy conditions on Wednesday night. Winds will ease and temperatures will dip to a low near -12°C.

Long Range Outlook

Unfortunately the colder weather his here to stay for the foreseeable future. Temperatures may warm a few degrees on Friday, but the cold weather quickly returns for the weekend. There is no significant snowfall in the forecast through the weekend into the first half of next week.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is +2°C while the seasonal overnight low is -6°C.
